Breast cancer is considered a serious public health problem worldwide, not only for the number of growing cases diagnosed each year, but also for the financial investment that is required to address diagnostic and treatment issues. Studies have ensured that the quality of medical imaging significantly interferes with ensuring a reliable diagnosis, affecting the sharpness of each structure. In this research, we used mammographic images from two different databases, and quantified the contribution of medical image parameters Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) e Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) as contrast enhancers, using smoothing filters and sharpening masks, with their criteria (Radius, Amount, Threshold) varied within a predefined interval. As a result, for some mammograms, the applied technique was not satisfactorily efficient, promoting only small variations in the parameters used for the comparative purpose. It is hypothesized for this phenomenon, the ranges of variation of the criteria being considered too small, and the need to investigate other contrast and sharpness enhancing parameters to obtain a processed and high-quality medical image.
