Abstract

Abstract In the present work the rating instrument for two-dimensional pictorial work measuring pictorial expressions (RizbA) is used and tested in a pilot study on the visual expression of people with chronic pain symptoms. It is assumed that differences in the pictorial expression of pain patients and a control group without complaints can be measured using RizbA. The hypotheses are supported by studies of the depiction of pain by affected individuals and artists. In the pilot study, spontaneous images of pain patients (N = 4) from an art therapy group and spontaneous images from a control group (N = 4) are objectified by experts (N = 33) who use RizbA. The experts are art therapists and people with artistic expertise. In 15 items of the RizbA questionnaire, significant differences between the two groups of pictures can be measured.
