Tussen 1500 en 1900 verschilden de maaltijden danig van deze die we op heden kennen. Wat men zoal verorberde op de site Vrouwenhove en later op Sabbe’s Hof wordt door Hendrik Demiddele uiteen gezet uitgaande van de gevonden plantaardige en dierlijke resten. Spijzen en dranken kwamen op tafel in vormen van eet- en drinkgerei. Oorspronkelijk bestonden de tafels uit smalle losse planken op schragen. Men at doorgaans op houten of tinnen snijplankjes of op borden. Ook brood kon als onderlegger dienen. Naar gelang een armer of rijker milieu dronk men uit aarden potten, glazen of metalen bekers en drinknappen.
