Abstract

Con el aumento constante de la demanda de ancho de banda que generan las aplicaciones de consumo y empresariales, es evidente que se necesita una nueva arquitectura de acceso con mayor capacidad. Los sistemas Passive Optical Network (PON) se han estandarizado y se empiezan a desplegar masivamente en diferentes mercados alrededor del mundo, y se convierten en la tecnología que intenta responder a estas necesidades. En este artículo se hace una revisión a las características y las ventajas que presentan estas redes y se realiza un análisis a su pertinencia y necesidad.
