Abstract

A relação do sujeito com a câmara escura e os aparatos ópticos do início do século XIX contribuiu para definir um indivíduo emancipado, que se viu, pela primeira vez na história da visualidade, não só como um produtor de conhecimento, como também detentor de um corpo pesquisável. Amparado a uma visão subjetiva, esse sujeito concedeu autonomia e abstração à visão, e a sua busca por meios de representação do mundo real o levaram da câmara escura à câmera fotográfica. Diante disso, o objeto de estudo desta pesquisa são obras selecionadas dos artistas Gordon Matta-Clark e Michael Wesely, os quais, de maneiras diferentes, atuam tanto como observadores quanto produtores. Observadores no sentido de que suas obras envolvem, necessariamente, um olhar para o entorno que os cerca, seja esse um olhar fotográfico, que se constitui no registro de um espaço no tempo – ou vários tempos, como é o caso –, ou um olhar analítico direcionado ao fragmentário, ao vazio e ao descarte. E produtores uma vez que, a partir do olhar, eles elaboram imagens que dialogam, simultaneamente, com o tempo e o espaço, através de um campo visual desordenado, não-linear e fragmentado. A partir dos três eixos que unem os dois artistas – o olhar, a fotografia e a arquitetura – buscaremos entender como as instâncias de tempo e espaço, e seus desdobramentos, se manifestam dentro de suas obras. Apropriaremo-nos das questões inerentes a cada um desses campos para abrir suas obras a um conflito, de forma a desvelar pontos de atrito e de confluência entre elas. Nos referenciaremos, também, a Robert Irwin, David Hockney, Robert Smithson, Marcel Duchamp, M. C. Escher, Eadweard Muybridge, Éttiene-Jules Marey, Eugene Atget, e Louis Daguerre de maneira a enriquecer a discussão em torno de suas obras como práticas do olhar, da fotografia e da arquitetura. Por meio de análises comparativas e interpretativas, desenvolveremos possibilidades de leituras de seus trabalhos sob os aspectos do tempo e do espaço, que se anunciam de maneiras próprias dentro de cada um dos campos desta pesquisa. The relation of the subject with the camera obscura and the optical apparatuses of the early nineteenth century contributed to define an emancipated individual who saw itself, for the first time in the history of visuality, not only as a knowledge producer but also as the possessor of a researchable body. Relying on a subjective vision, this subject conceived autonomy and abstraction to the vision and its search for means of representing the real world took him from the camera obscura to the photographic camera. Having said that, the objects of study in this research are the selected works of Gordon Matta-Clark and Michael Wesely, who act differently both as observers and producers. Observers in the sense that their works involve, necessarily, a look around their surroundings, whether that is a photographic look which constitutes a record of a space in time – or several times, as is the case – or an analytical look directed to the fragmentary, to the emptiness and to the disaster. And producers in a way that, from this look, they elaborate images that dialogue, simultaneously, with time and space, through a chaotic, non-linear and fragmented visual field. Taking as a starting point the three areas which unite both artists – look, photography and architecture – we aim to understand how the instances of time and space, and their unfolding, manifest themselves within their work. We will appropriate of the inner questions of each of these fields to open their work to a conflict, in order to unveil the divergent and convergent aspects between them. We will also refer to Robert Irwin, David Hockney, Robert Smithson, Marcel Duchamp, M. C. Escher, Eadweard Muybridge, Éttiene-Jules Marey, Eugene Atget, and Louis Daguerre with the purpose of enriching the discussion around their work as practices of the look, photography and architecture. Through comparative and interpretative analyses, we will develop reading possibilities of their work under the aspects of time and space, which are announced differently within each of the fields of this research.
