Abstract

Abstract The Catastro de Ensenada is a fiscal investigation carried out between 1749 and 1756, during the reign of Fernando VI, for the imposition of the Only Contribution in the Crown of Castilla. It was a project of simplification of taxes that facilitated its payment. In this work the botanical aspects contained in the answers of the Marques de la Ensenada Interrogatory in the Parish of San Juan de Santtas (Antas de Ulla, Lugo, Galicia, NO Spain) are analyzed. From the reading of this document, we can deduce the importance of the primary sector in the parishioners’ economy. 73.5% of the territory is heavily intervened by man, while only 26.08% maintained a more natural structure. Two species of trees are mentioned, oak (Quercus robur L.) and chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) and 6 or 7 herbaceous plants, rye (Secale cereale L.), coarse millet (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), small millet, flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) and turnips (Brassica sp.).
