Abstract

Ein Überblicksaufsatz über den amerikanischen Regisseur Michael Mann und dessen Filmästhetik. Der bekannte Vorwurf der Oberflächlichkeit, den man insgesamt dem US-amerikanischen Kino der Achtzigerjahre macht, wird von Mann zu einem philosophisch-ästhetischen Problem erhoben. Manns Filme setzen das "perfekte Verbrechen" (Baudrillard) der Oberfläche in Szene - und setzen sich ihm zugleich aus. Wo andere Filme der Achtzigerjahre in das verfallen, was Fredric Jameson den "nostalgia mode" nennt, in dem man eine verloren gegangene Geschichte wenigstens noch als Pastiche zu retten versucht, wird bei Mann das Fehlen jeglicher Referenz schonungslos anerkannt.
