The Institutional Mechanics of Proxy Authority: How Deep-Tech Startups Circumvent Legacy Software Moats through Micro-Utility Catalysts

Abstract

As artificial intelligence drastically reduces code synthesis costs, technological moats based solely on software development are eroding. In high-risk enterprise sectors—such as Electronic Design Automation (EDA), aerospace simulation, and multi-physics modeling—incumbent software platforms derive their primary defensibility not from raw algorithmic superiority, but from decade-long empirical calibration data and institutional authority. This paper introduces the framework of Proxy Authority and the Onboarding Catalyst to explain how deep-tech startups circumvent these institutional barriers. We demonstrate that aggressive price cuts trigger counter-signaling distrust in high-risk B2B markets. To overcome this, new entrants must leverage academic validation, plugin ecosystems, and hyper-focused micro-utilities to lower adoption friction while systematically acquiring institutional trust.
