Abstract

Innovate 4 Nature (I4N) is a UKCEH‑led programme, funded by Defra, that brings together evidence on the challenges faced within Low‑ and Middle‑Income Countries (LMICs) in adopting biodiversity monitoring technologies and what is needed to make them truly effective, equitable, and impactful. Biodiversity is declining at unprecedented rates, with over one million species at risk of extinction, yet many LMICs face major barriers to monitoring the nature they depend on: high costs, limited access to suitable technologies, fragmented data, weak analytical infrastructure, and persistent inequities in whose knowledge is recognised and who benefits from monitoring. I4N addresses these challenges. Drawing on a rapid evidence assessment, a global questionnaire, in‑depth interviews, and a regional workshop in East Africa, the programme maps how technologies, from GIS and camera traps to AI, mobile apps, and eDNA, are currently used, where they fall short, and what opportunities they unlock. The findings highlight widespread enthusiasm for technology’s potential to improve data quality, efficiency, and transparency, but also reveal critical needs: affordable and locally appropriate tools, stronger data governance, investment in analytical capacity, and inclusive approaches that centre local communities and Indigenous knowledge. I4N provides a clear, evidence‑based picture of the barriers and enablers across the full monitoring pathway, from hardware and data access, to skills, infrastructure, and governance. Above all, it shows that the greatest opportunity is not simply new technology, but ensuring existing tools and data translate into real‑world conservation decisions, support sustainable livelihoods, and strengthen ecosystem protection. The Innovate 4 Nature report shares these insights to help shape scalable, context‑appropriate, and socially inclusive biodiversity monitoring systems for the future.
