DETERMINANTS OF ACADEMIC STAFF WORK EFFICIENCY: A HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

This study examines the key Human Resource Management (HRM) factors influencing the workefficiency of academic staff in higher education institutions. In today’s knowledge-based economy, universitiesare expected to enhance teaching quality, research productivity, and institutional performance while adaptingto rapid technological and organizational changes. Effective human resource management plays a vital role inimproving academic staff performance by fostering a supportive work environment and promoting continuousprofessional development.The study investigates the influence of professional development and training, research support, leadershipsupport, workload balance, compensation, career development opportunities, performance evaluation systems,work–life balance, and the institutional environment on the work efficiency of academic staff. A quantitativeresearch approach was employed using survey data collected from academic staff at higher educationinstitutions. Statistical techniques, including reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regressionanalysis, were applied to identify the most significant determinants of work efficiency.The findings indicate that professional development, balanced workload, leadership support, compensation,career development opportunities, work–life balance, and a supportive institutional environment have a positiveand statistically significant influence on academic staff work efficiency. In contrast, research support andperformance evaluation systems exhibit comparatively weaker effects. The study contributes to the HumanResource Management literature by providing empirical evidence from the higher education sector and offerspractical recommendations for university administrators and policymakers to strengthen HRM practices aimedat improving organizational effectiveness and academic performance
