Abstract

Driven by the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, India’s higher education sector, one of the world's largest, encompassing over 43.3 million students across approximately 43,000 colleges, is undergoing a critical systemic shift from expanding infrastructure access to prioritizing global integration, research excellence, and outcome-oriented quality (Ministry of Education [MoE], 2020; Ministry of Education, 2024). While the nation boasts immense educational capacity, a stark structural mismatch persists between traditional academic output and the dynamic needs of the global corporate market (Pradhan & Pradhan, 2021; Anand & Saxena, 2022). This industry-academia gap is characterized by an over-reliance on outdated technical theory rather than advanced AI and digital literacy, a pervasive culture of rote memorization over critical thinking, and an evaluation system that stresses individual grading at the expense of agile, cross-functional teamwork (Gupta & Sukumar, 2023; World Economic Forum [WEF], 2023). Consequently, despite a rising national graduate employability rate of 56.35%, millions of graduates from generalized streams remain underemployed, creating a corporate "unlearning tax" where enterprises must heavily retrain fresh hires to meet the high-end product-thinking demands of modern Global Capability Centers (GCCs) (India Skills Report, 2024; Pradhan & Pradhan, 2021). To bridge this bottleneck and transform India into a competitive global education hub, a synchronized, multi-layered roadmap must be executed across institutional, structural, and societal dimensions (MoE, 2020; Kumar & Singh, 2022). This transition requires overhauling rigid syllabi with agile, project-based "build-to-learn" frameworks and stackable micro-credentials, alongside a radical evolution of faculty roles that introduces corporate "Professors of Practice" and decouples teachers from heavy administrative burdens (University Grants Commission [UGC], 2022; Ministry of Education, 2023). Simultaneously, students must pivot toward building verifiable digital skill portfolios, supported by a cultural rewiring that de-stigmatizes career failures and values demonstrable competence over social degree pedigree (WEF, 2023). Ultimately, clearing the runway for this evolution depends on closing regional digital divides through public-private partnerships, dismantling rigid college affiliation systems in favor of autonomous multidisciplinary clusters, and anchoring universities directly into local industrial corridors to convert India’s vast demographic volume into a high-value engine for global leadership (NITI Aayog, 2019; MoE, 2020).
