Cult. 3: 390 (1802) Laurocerasus officinalis M. Roem., Fam. Nat. Syn. Monogr. 3: 91 (1847) Ind. loc.: “Habitat in Trapezunte unde in Europam venit 1576” [Trebisonda, en el NE de Anatolia] Ic.: Maire, Fl. Afrique N. 15: 305 fig. 167 (1980) Arbusto o arbolito hasta 10 m, perennifolio, inerme. Ramas de corteza lisa, pardo-negruzca; ramillas en general glabras, de color verde. Hojas 8-16 × 2,5- 7,5 cm, coriáceas, oblongo-elípticas, elípticas, oblanceoladas u oblongo-lanceoladas, acuminadas, ± remotamente crenadas o aserradas, a veces subenteras, glabras, de haz lustrosa y envés más pálido y con 2-6 glándulas hacia la base, cerca del nervio medio y repartidas a ambos lados de él –las hojas, al triturarlas, huelen a almendras amargas–; pecíolo 0,5-1 cm, corto, glabro, de color verde; estípulas tempranamente caducas, lineares, submembranáceas, glabras. Flores 25-45, con olor de almendras amargas, en cimas racemiformes axilares sin hojas en el pedúnculo, éstas erectas o suberectas, de 7-15 cm, más cortas que la hoja o un poco más largas; pedicelos c. 4 mm, patentes. Receptáculo 3-4,5 mm, acopado, atenuado hacia la base. Sépalos muy cortos, anchamente ovados, obtusos. Pétalos 3-5 mm, patentes, obovados, enteros, obtusos, blancos. Ovario glabro. Fruto 10-15 mm, de globoso a ovoide, apiculado, glabro, primero verde, luego rojizo y al madurar negruzco y lustroso, sin pruina; mesocarpo estrecho, de sabor áspero; endocarpo ovoide, liso, con una costilla lateral. 2 n = 144*, 170-180*, c. 176*. Bosques de caducifolios (robledales, castañares, etc.); 50-500 m; IV-VI(VII). Oriundo del E de la Península Balcánica, Cáucaso, Anatolia y el Irán; como cultivado y asilvestrado, en otras muchas regiones de clima templado. En la Península Ibérica, como asilvestrado, en la Cornisa Cantábrica, Cataluña y la Estremadura portuguesa. Esp.: [B] [(Bi)] [(Lu)] [O] [S] [SS]. Port.: [(E)]. N.v.: lauroceraso, laurel cerezo, laurel real, laurel romano, lauro real, loro; port.: louro-cerejo, loiro-cerejo, loiro-inglés, loureiro-cerejeira, loureiro-de-trebizonda, loureiro-real, loureiro-romano; cat.: llorer-cirer, llorer reial; eusk.: gerezi-erramua; gall: loureiro romano. Las hojas frescas contienen un heterósido cianógeno (prunasósido), que por hidrólisis produce ácido cianhídrico; éste puede dar lugar a intoxicaciones graves. Planta ornamental de la que se obtiene el “agua destilada de laurel cerezo” que, desprovista de casi la totalidad del ácido cianhídrico, se usa como aromatizante y forma parte, como medicinal, de jarabes para el tratamiento de afecciones bronco-pulmonares. Observaciones.– Ha sido citado también de Burbia (Valle de Finolledo, León), probablemente al habérselo confundido con la P. lusitanica –cf. M.F. Gadow, In Northern Spain: 394 (1897).
