Abstract

CXV. SIMAROUBACEAE [nom. cons.]* Árboles o arbustos, monoicos, dioicos o polígamos. Hojas caducas, alternas –raramente opuestas–, compuestas –pinnadas o ternadas, rara vez simples–; sin estípulas o, cuando hay, diminutas y fugaces; folíolos de margen ± entero, con glándulas nectaríferas. Inflorescencia axilar, en cima, racimo, espiga, panícula o amento, o flores solitarias. Flores hermafroditas o unisexuales, actinomorfas; receptáculo a veces con andróforo o ginóforo; disco nectarífero extrastaminal –en ocasiones falta–. Sépalos (2)3-5(8), libres o soldados en la base. Pétalos 3- 5(8), libres –a veces faltan–. Estambres (3)10(16), libres entre sí y no soldados a la corola; filamentos a veces con apéndices o con escamas en la base; anteras dorsifijas o basifijas, introrsas, extrorsas o con el conectivo en un lateral; polen tricolpado o colporado. Ovario súpero, unilocular o con 2-5(8) lóculos –en las flores masculinas a veces reducido a un pistilodio–; carpelos 2-5(8), soldados entre sí o libres; estilos 2-5(8), apicales –cuando los carpelos están soldados–, laterales o ginobásicos y ± soldados –cuando los carpelos están libres–; estigmas 2-5(8); rudimentos seminales 1(2) por lóculo. Fruto en esquizocarpo, con 2-5 mericarpos, polidrupa, polibaya, poliaquenio o polisámara –si los carpelos están libres–, o en cápsula, baya, drupa o sámara –cuando están soldados. Observaciones.– Familia integrada por 20 géneros y c. 95 especies de distribución tropical o subtropical, si bien llega al Japón y al C de Argentina. Las plantas de esta familia tienen hasta 120 compuestos del grupo de los triterpenoides cuasinoides, algunos de ellos con actividad citostática –en general antileucémicos–; sin embargo, la mayoría son tóxicos, lo que dificulta su uso en la terapia del cáncer.
