2. X. orientale L., Sp. Pl. ed. 2: 1400 (1763) [orientále] X. canadense Mill., Gard. Dict. ed. 8, n.º 2 (1768) X. macrocarpum DC. in Lam. & DC., Fl. Franç., ed. 3, 5: 356 (1815) Ind. loc.: “ Habitat in China, Japonia, Zeylona ” [lectótipo designado por D. Jeanmonod in Jeanm., Bocquet & Burdet (eds.), Complém. Prodr. Fl. Corse: 190 (1998): LINN] Hierba aromática. Tallo 40-100(150) × 0,4-1 cm. Hojas 5,6-19,2 × 5-16,2 cm, algo coriáceas, de ovadas a subtriangulares, cordiformes o cuneadas en la base, con pelos de 0,3-0,5 mm y glándulas sésiles, amarillas o anaranjadas, por las dos caras; pecíolo 2,3-15 cm. Capítulos masculinos de (4)5-7 mm de diámetro. Capítulos femeninos en grupos de (2)3-8; involucro fructífero 18-25 × 7-15 mm, de oblongo-elipsoide a elipsoide, con pelos simples de 0,3-0,8 mm, numerosos, y con pelos glandulíferos de 0,15-0,2(0,3) mm, densos; espinas uncinadas, ± numerosas, densas, de 3-7,5 mm, con pelos ± patentes en 1/3-1/2 de su longitud; picos terminales 4,5-10(12) mm (gancho incluido), duros y curvados o por el contrario delgados, rectos y uncinados en el ápice, con pelos ± patentes en 1/3-3/4(4/5) de su longitud. Aquenios 0,7-3,3 mm. 2 n = 36. Herbazales ruderales higro-nitrófilos, en terrenos alterados de orillas de ríos y arenales y cascajares marítimos y fluviales, acequias, bordes de caminos, escombreras, vertederos, embalses, terrenos cultivados, en substratos de naturaleza diversa; 0-1040(1400) m. III-X(XI). América, Europa Central y Región Mediterránea. Casi toda la Península Ibérica e Islas Baleares.
