A New Life for Gestalt Therapy: How the Laws of Consciousness Mechanics and the Ekvilibro Game Transform the Work with Awareness, Contact, and Polarities

Abstract

This paper establishes a conceptual connection between Fritz Perls' Gestalt therapy — an existential-humanistic approach grounded in wholeness, awareness, and contact "here-and-now" — and the laws of the mechanics of consciousness (Ekvilibro) together with the Ekvilibro Game method. It is demonstrated that Perls' key concepts (awareness, contact boundary, figure and ground, unfinished gestalts, polarities, the paradoxical theory of change, avoidance mechanisms, dreams, responsibility) find a dynamic interpretation within the framework of the Ekvilibro laws of consciousness mechanics. Awareness is defined as the activation of the Observer, wherein consciousness ceases to automatically move between the poles of duality (First Law). The contact boundary is the point of encounter between the poles of "I" and "world," where the Observer emerges. Figure and ground represent the dynamics of figure-ground differentiation (Third Law: the figure is always paired with its ground). Unfinished gestalts are frozen dualities with a high mass of identifications (midmid). Polarities are a direct manifestation of the Third Law: any opposites (love/hate, strength/weakness, control/spontaneity) are inseparable. The paradoxical theory of change holds that change occurs not through fighting a pole, but through its full awareness and holding, followed by a natural letting go (steps 4 and 6 of the Ekvilibro Game as a single cycle). Dreams are not interpreted but are lived through as projections of polarities. Responsibility is the ability to hold both poles without projecting one onto another. The Ekvilibro Game method is proposed as a new practical tool for therapeutic work — a structured alternative to spontaneous Gestalt experiments, where poles are not merely discovered but consciously held in balance and then released to complete the contact cycle. The tool trains the Observer (analogous to the "I" in Gestalt therapy), accelerates gestalt completion, and provides client and therapist with a shared language for working with polarities. The article is intended for Gestalt therapists, psychotherapists, consciousness researchers, practitioners, and all those seeking a precise, testable language for describing psychic dynamics.
