Community-led Mangrove Management Using Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)

Abstract

Mangroves are unique forests that grow along coastlines. They act as natural barriers against storms, support rich biodiversity, and provide vital resources for nearby communities. However, these ecosystems are under threat due to pollution, deforestation, and climate change, leading to rapid loss of mangrove cover. This study explores how local communities are using Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) to manage, protect, and restore mangrove ecosystems. Coastal communities have a deep connection with mangroves, having observed nature closely over many years. They understand tidal movements, the behavior of marine species, and how to care for mangroves in a way that maintains ecological balance. This research, based on case studies and interviews, highlights real-life examples where community-led efforts have successfully contributed to mangrove conservation. While modern scientific approaches and government policies have often overlooked TEK, the findings of this study emphasize its importance. When communities take the lead and their knowledge is respected, conservation outcomes tend to be more effective and long-lasting. The research suggests that blending TEK with contemporary conservation strategies can lead to the successful restoration of damaged mangrove areas. Community-led mangrove management not only supports the environment but also empowers local populations and strengthens their livelihoods. This inclusive and sustainable approach offers a promising path forward for preserving these vital coastal ecosystems.
