Triple Data Sustainability in Digital Cultural Heritage: Technical, Content, and Educational Dimensions of Graph Data with WissKI

Abstract

This publication documents a presentation from the SODa project that was given at the UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association Sustainability 2026 Annual Event and includes the proposal submitted for the presentation. The presentation introduces the Scientific Infrastructure WissKI, a virtual research environment that enables the creation, management, and publication of linked open data in the domain of cultural heritage. Working with WissKI addresses the conference theme, Sustainability in Digital Humanities and Digital Cultural Heritage, across three interconnected dimensions: technical sustainability, content sustainability, and educational sustainability. Technical and content sustainability are exemplified by WissKI, a modular, open-source framework extending the Drupal content management system with semantic web technologies. Aligned with the FAIR principles, it ensures long-term sustainability of both infrastructure and research data. Persistent URIs and ontology-based modelling support interoperability and semantic clarity, enabling future computational analysis and comparative research.Educational sustainability is addressed through the SODa project and the WissKI Bits How-to-Tutorial, a modular workshop published as an Open Eduacational Resource (OER) in a train-the-trainer format. It supports sustainable skill development for diverse groups, including researchers, collection managers, students, and infrastructure staff. SODa: This project with the funding code 16DKZ2016B was funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and NextGenerationEU (NGEU).
