The Suriname Time Machine as a Reparative Digital Infrastructure

Abstract

The historical archives of Suriname are fragmented, scattered across different repositories in Paramaribo, Amsterdam, The Hague, and other locations. This reflects centuries of colonial administration, during which records were created to serve imperial authorities rather than the communities they documented. Many of these materials have only recently been digitized, yet they often remain isolated in digital silos, searchable but disconnected from one another. These conditions pose significant challenges for historians, heritage professionals, and descendant communities seeking to reconstruct the past in ways that are accurate, contextualized, and ethically informed. The European Time Machine model offers one approach to addressing such challenges. Developed initially through the Venice Time Machine project, this model links large-scale archival datasets using space and time as shared reference points, supporting complex visualization and analysis of historical processes. It has facilitated the standardization of data, the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), and the adoption of Linked Open Data (LOD) to make archives interoperable and accessible on scale. While these tools have advanced historical research in Europe, the model carries assumptions about data abundance, institutional capacity, access and ownership, and the coherence of archival records, which may not hold in postcolonial contexts. Applying the Time Machine concept in Suriname requires careful adaptation. Structural imbalances in archival holdings, the dispersal of materials, and the colonial origins and contents of records all pose challenges to straightforward implementation. Automated linking and visualization can risk reproducing the administrative violence embedded in colonial documentation (Risam 2019). Researchers must therefore consider both the technical and ethical dimensions of digital reconstruction, ensuring that the project does not replicate inequities in access or representation. The Suriname Time Machine (STM) addresses these challenges through a context-driven adaptation of the European model. It interlinks diverse datasets while preserving provenance and archival transparency, applies data modeling that aims to restore personhood to historical actors that have been dehumanized and commodified by the colonial archives, and actively engages local and diaspora communities in co-creation. By doing so, it seeks to create a reparative digital infrastructure that supports academic and non-academic scholarship while recognizing and addressing the historical and ongoing impacts of colonial archival practices. The central question guiding this paper is how a multi-user linked data framework can function as a reparative scholarly edition of the colonial archive that improves access, representation, and interpretive depth for Caribbean heritage. In the sections that follow, we first describe the Time Machine as a European model, then examine the challenges of applying it in postcolonial contexts, introduce the STM and its methodological innovations, and finally highlight the role of the Sranan Story Collective in extending the project into participatory, human-centered historical reconstruction.
