"Beyond the Scalpel: Emerging Nursing Strategies for Surgical Site Infection Prevention in Modern Healthcare Settings"

Abstract

Abstract: Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) remain one of the most prevalent healthcare-associated infections worldwide, contributing significantly to patient morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and increased healthcare expenditure. Despite advancements in surgical techniques, anesthesia, sterilization methods, and antimicrobial therapies, SSIs continue to pose a substantial challenge to healthcare systems. Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing SSIs through evidence-based interventions spanning the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care. Emerging nursing strategies, including enhanced infection surveillance, implementation of care bundles, utilization of digital health technologies, patient-centered education, antimicrobial stewardship, and data-driven quality improvement initiatives, have demonstrated considerable effectiveness in reducing SSI rates. Furthermore, technological innovations such as artificial intelligence-assisted risk prediction, remote wound monitoring, telehealth follow-up systems, and smart wound care devices are transforming infection prevention practices. This review examines the epidemiology, risk factors, and consequences of SSIs while highlighting contemporary and emerging nursing strategies that contribute to improved surgical outcomes. The article emphasizes the expanding role of nurses in multidisciplinary infection prevention programs and explores future directions for enhancing patient safety through innovative nursing interventions. Strengthening nursing competencies and integrating evidence-based preventive measures are essential for reducing SSI incidence and improving healthcare quality globally.
