
Abstract: Heatwaves have emerged as one of the most significant climate-related public health threats worldwide. The increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme heat events due to climate change have resulted in substantial morbidity, mortality, economic losses, and social disruption. Vulnerable populations, including older adults, children, individuals with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, experience disproportionate impacts during heatwaves. Community-based strategies for heatwave preparedness and response have gained recognition as effective approaches for reducing heat-related illnesses and deaths by promoting local resilience, early warning systems, public education, healthcare preparedness, and coordinated emergency responses. This review examines the epidemiology and health consequences of heatwaves, explores community-level preparedness and response strategies, and highlights the critical role of healthcare professionals, community organizations, local governments, and public health systems in mitigating heat-related risks. The article synthesizes current evidence regarding heatwave adaptation measures, community engagement initiatives, risk communication strategies, surveillance systems, and policy interventions. Strengthening community resilience through integrated and equitable approaches is essential for protecting public health in an era of escalating climate challenges.
