Impactful Datasets in the Earth, Space, and Environmental Sciences

Abstract

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is celebrating and highlighting the many impactful datasets that support the broad spectrum of research, analysis, and decision making by our community. The creation, stewardship, and use of these impactful datasets should be broadly recognized. The statement above is taken from the pre-amble of the dataset nomination form. Following a nomination period of June 2025 - November 2025, the datasets were reviewed for inclusion in a commentary published in the AGU Advances journal, and representing the first paper of a new special collection further highlighting impactful datasets. The nomination form remains open for additional submissions. The spreadsheet is organized to include information about the dataset, how the nominator interacts with the dataset, and nominator information. Information about the dataset Column A: Discipline Group (more on these below) Column B: Dataset Name Column C: Dataset Authors or Creators Column D: Dataset link or location (Persistent Identifier (PID) or URL of the landing page for the dataset) Column E: Repository Name where Dataset is hosted Column F: Repository Persistent Identifier (RRID, DOI, other) Column G: Repository Data managers or curators that support the dataset. Column H: Short description of the dataset How the nominator interacts with the dataset Column I: Justification for inclusion in AGU commentary. Why is the nominated dataset impactful “in your own words” or “in your opinion” and examining the three following dimensions taken from the Geoscience in Action report: People: education, training, disaster response and prediction Planet: geophysical phenomena, conservation, climate, environment Prosperity: economic good, social equity, humanitarian relief, community resilience Column J: Short description of how the nominator interacts with this dataset. Column K: Reference publication that describes the dataset. Column L: Examples of how this dataset has been reused, any bibliographies listing instances of reuse, or any references to derived data products/datasets. Nominator Information Column M: Nominator Name Column N: Nominator Email Address Column O: Nominator ORCID Column P: Nominator Affiliation or Organization To facilitate navigation of the impactful datasets, they are organized in broad disciplinary groups (Column A): Space and Planetary Science Atmospheric Science, Space Weather Earth’s Interior, Geodesy Ocean Science, Hydrology, Cryosphere Earth Surface, Natural Hazards, Geology, Near Surface Geophysics Global Environmental Change, Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Biogeoscience Nonlinear Geophysics, Machine Learning, Informatics Geohealth, Society, Education Earth & Planetary Materials How the disciplinary groups were formed, as described in the commentary: "It is understood that there are wide overlaps among the disciplines, not only within each group, but also across the groups. This is not only acknowledged, but also desirable, as the impact of each dataset increases with their utilization in multidisciplinary projects." This dataset is licensed for reuse and sharing. Please give attribution by citing both the related paper as well as this dataset. The citation to the paper will be added shortly. As new nominations are made, AGU will subsequently update this list. Updates identified following v1 publication: 1.
