The JWST LEGGOS Survey: A logo that reflects the survey's science and collaborative spirit

Abstract

The JWST LEGGOS Survey (PIs Khullar, Florian, Bayliss from JWST Cycle 2 GO + Cycle 1 Archival Programs) has a logo that embodies the spirit of the observational programs and its science goals, while placing an emphasis on the targets from GO-4125 and GO-3843, and the ethos behind the team/collaboration's work ethic as part of the team. The logo is a representation of the JWST primary mirror (in gold), with a brick-by-brick sectioning of the mirror (into six pieces) depicting the science goals of the program -- the idea of studying the physics of the building blocks of galaxies at cosmic noon. Each section has a graphical representation of a target -- SGAS1110, SGAS1429, SGAS1527, SGAS2111, SGAS1050 and the Cosmic Eye (from Hubble imaging; e.g., see Sharon+2020). The primary science observations of the program -- NIRSpec/integral field spectroscopy (IFS) -- are depicted by the spectrum in the background, which is simultaneously emphasizing the inclusive collaboration that is JWST LEGGOS. We also note that we do not use the full name of JWST in the publications we share, due to the person after whom this telescope is named, and their role as NASA administrator during the ``Lavender Scare'', as per the #RenameJWST protest movement. We are honored to release this logo, and the associated program/survey paper, during LGBTQIA+ pride month 2026.
