Can soil organic carbon be sustainably increased? A synthesis of scientific evidence and EJP SOIL results

Abstract

A concise scientific synthesis of current knowledge on sustainable soil organic carbon accumulation and sequestration in agricultural soils, based on recent literature and EJP SOIL results. It was prepared for the European Soil Parnership General Assembly. The report reviews mechanisms, management options, sequestration potentials, and key conditions for sustainable implementation, including permanence, additionality and environmental trade-offs.

Keywords

soil organic carbon, trade-offs, C sequestration, agricultural soils, climate change mitigation
