Fourier analysis of cactus phyllotaxy

Abstract

Fourier-based analysis of photos of phyllotaxy in cactus. From top-down photos of cactus spiral phyllotaxy, the analysis includes conversion to polar coordinates, generation of 1D spectrograms by row, detrended frequency peak detection, and evaluation of most probable phyllotaxy type (Fibonacci, Lucas, or other), as well as idealized simulated data for each type.
