Superheated Steam Drying: From Concepts to the First Retrofit

Abstract

This infographic summarizes the three Superheated Steam Drying (SSD) concepts for industrial paper drying applications, comparing convective SSD, conductive SSD, and the combined SSD approach (convective + conductive). It highlights the key technical and economic factors influencing industrial implementation and explains why the combined SSD concept is currently considered the leading candidate for the first industrial retrofit. The combined approach provides the most balanced solution, offering significant energy-saving potential, acceptable payback times, proven runnability, and realistic retrofit opportunities within existing paper machine configurations.
