A Layer-Averaged Numerical Model for Turbidity Currents Coupled with Heat Transport: Single-Layer and Two-Layer Implementations

Abstract

This repository provides MATLAB implementations of one-dimensional layer-averaged turbidity current models coupled with heat transport. The code includes: a single-layer model resolving flow thickness, momentum, suspended sediment transport (fine and coarse fractions), turbulent kinetic energy, and layer-averaged temperature evolution; a two-layer model consisting of a sediment-laden lower layer and an overlying clear-water layer, with explicit treatment of interfacial momentum exchange, entrainment, and heat transfer. Trhe models ae designed for field-scale simulations of long-distance turbidity currents and their associated thermal anomalies in deep-sea environments. Numerical schemes are based on finite-volume formulations with explicit time integration. The repository contains the model source code and minimal input files required to reproduce example simulations. The reanalysis product used in the associated study (e.g., CMEMS potential temperature data) is not redistributed and should be obtained directly from CMEMS.
