ANXIETY LEVELS AMONG RURAL AND URBAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: A COMPARATIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY IN NORTH COASTAL ANDHRA PRADESH

Abstract

AbstractAnxiety is one of the most influential psychological factors affecting students' academicachievement, sports performance, social relationships, and overall well-being. Adolescence is acritical developmental period during which students experience various academic, social, emotional, and environmental pressures that may contribute to anxiety. The present study aimedto compare anxiety levels among rural and urban high school students in North Coastal AndhraPradesh. A total of 300 students from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam districtswere selected for the study. Anxiety levels were assessed using a standardized anxietyquestionnaire. Statistical analysis was carried out using mean, standard deviation, and t-testtechniques. The results revealed differences in anxiety levels between rural and urban students, indicating the influence of environmental conditions, educational pressures, family expectations, social relationships, and lifestyle factors. The findings emphasize the need for psychologicalsupport systems, counseling services, and stress-management programs within educationalinstitutions. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on adolescent mentalhealth and offers practical recommendations for educators, psychologists, parents, andpolicymakers.
