AgeBack: Annual 100-m Backcast Forest Age Maps for Europe, 1900-2019

Abstract

The AgeBack dataset provides annual maps of forest age across Europe from 1900 to 2019 at 100-m spatial resolution for 38 countries. The maps were reconstructed using a spatially explicit, observation-driven backcasting framework initialized from a 2020 forest-age map and constrained by satellite-observed forest disturbances, historical harvested wood volumes, rotation periods, forest area changes, and natural disturbance information. An additional 50-km forest-age dataset accounting for both high-forest stands and coppice forests is also provided for 1900-2010 (AgeBackCoppice)
