Climate-Washing Litigation Coding Dataset: 100 Cases Across 14 Countries, 2009–2026

Abstract

This dataset accompanies the article "Climate-Washing as Information-Integrity Risk: Allegation Patterns and Governance Gaps in 100 Climate Claim Disputes" (submitted to Risk Analysis). It contains a coded record of 100 formally contested climate claims drawn from the Sabin Center's Climate Change Litigation Database, covering cases filed across 14 countries between 2009 and 2026. The workbook comprises three sheets: a case-level data entry sheet coded across ten variables in five groups (the claim, communication channel, allegation type, institutional context, and outcome); a lists sheet containing dropdown reference values; and a codebook reference sheet defining all coding categories. Full variable definitions, coding guidance, and intercoder reliability results are reported in the accompanying article.
