Cognitive and social decision-making skills in adult-onset Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1)

Abstract

This poster presents a preliminary investigation of cognitive and social decision-making in adults with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1). The study evaluated the feasibility of a novel Social Iowa Gambling Task (Social IGT), which incorporates social cues into decision-making scenarios, and compared the performance of eight adults with DM1 to that of 25 healthy controls. While no significant differences were found in overall decision-making performance between groups, individuals with DM1 showed impairments in planning and organizational abilities. Results suggested that social cues may enhance learning during decision-making tasks in DM1, as participants demonstrated improved learning trajectories in the Social IGT compared to the standard version. These findings support the feasibility of using socially enriched decision-making paradigms in DM1 research and highlight the need for larger studies exploring the cognitive and social mechanisms underlying decision-making in this population.
