Observing Through Infrastructures: A Layered Heuristic for Analysing Collective Knowledge Formation

Abstract

This paper proposes a structured interdisciplinary heuristic for analysing how collective knowledge emerges from the interaction of observation infrastructures and interpretation processes. Drawing on cybernetics, information theory, the sociology of knowledge, science and technology studies (STS), and organisational cognition, the paper organises the path from latent reality to collective knowledge into six observational layers: projection, sensors, monitoring systems, representations/embeddings, ranking mechanisms, and attention allocation, followed by interpretation and social negotiation. Rather than introducing a new theory, law, or causal model, the framework is presented as a conceptual heuristic and diagnostic tool. Its purpose is to make explicit where epistemic filtering, information attenuation, and collective blind spots may arise, and to provide a common vocabulary for discussing observability, early-warning signal visibility, and knowledge formation across complex adaptive systems. The paper concludes by positioning the framework as a comparative and analytical lens that may help structure future empirical investigations into observation pathways, detectability, and collective blind spots. Aufbauend auf Erkenntnissen aus Kybernetik, Informationstheorie, Wissenssoziologie, Science and Technology Studies (STS) sowie Organisationsforschung wird der Weg von der latenten Realität zum kollektiven Wissen in sechs Beobachtungsebenen gegliedert: Projektion, Sensoren, Monitoring-Systeme, Repräsentationen/Embeddings, Ranking-Mechanismen und Aufmerksamkeitsallokation, ergänzt durch eine Phase der Interpretation und sozialen Aushandlung. Anstatt eine neue Theorie, ein Naturgesetz oder ein Kausalmodell zu formulieren, versteht sich der Ansatz als konzeptionelle Heuristik und diagnostisches Werkzeug. Ziel ist es, sichtbar zu machen, an welchen Stellen epistemische Filterungen, Informationsverluste und kollektive blinde Flecken entstehen können, und eine gemeinsame Sprache für Beobachtbarkeit, Frühwarnsignale und Wissensbildung in komplexen adaptiven Systemen bereitzustellen. Das Paper positioniert die Heuristik als analytische und vergleichende Perspektive, die zukünftige empirische Untersuchungen zu Beobachtungspfaden, Detektierbarkeit und kollektiven blinden Flecken strukturieren kann.
