Abstract

Abstract. This study examines the emergence of the pun (calambur) in Spanishculture and analyzes its genre characteristics within literary and oral traditions. Theresearch explores the historical development of calambur as a linguistic and stylisticdevice, its cultural significance, and its role in Spanish humor, poetry, and rhetoric.Using qualitative textual analysis, the study investigates representative examplesfrom Spanish literature and folklore. The findings reveal that calambur emerged asa prominent form of verbal wit during the Spanish Golden Age and developeddistinctive genre features, including phonetic ambiguity, semantic duality, humor,and social criticism.
