EFFECT OF CREDIT WORTHINESS ON GROWTH OF SMALL AND MEDIUM DAIRY ENTERPRISES IN KIAMBU COUNTY, KENYA

Abstract

ABSTRACT Small and Medium Enterprises played a vital role for economic development and providing job creation. Kiambu County as the leading milk producer in Kenya with an annual production of 430 million liters of milk, continues to face grievances of reduced dairy goods and food insecurity despite the national growth in dairy production. The growth of SMEs occurred when companies found funding and selling had increased; however, how much dairy SMEs achieved growth was not previously verified scientifically. The research examined the effects of credit worthiness on the growth of small and medium dairy enterprises in Kiambu County, Kenya. It was based on credit rationing theory. A correlational and quantitative design was adopted on 175 licensed firms using a census survey with questionnaires. Pilot research was conducted to test reliability and validity, whereas the diagnostic evaluations were carried out to check the reliability of data. The research permissions and the anonymity of respondents were considered as ethical issues. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression to determine the influence of financial access on the development of dairy SMEs in Kiambu county. The results revealed that credit worthiness and firm growth also exhibit a strong correlation (r = 0.805, p < 0.01) indicating the significance of good financial record to obtain resources to grow. The research found that creditworthiness was a major factor in the development of dairy SMEs. Descriptive analysis indicated that there was moderate to high perception of creditworthiness, more agreement on financial stability and credit history, and lower on collateral availability. The correlation analysis showed that there was a strong positive correlation between creditworthiness and firm growth, which means that an increased creditworthiness promotes the accessibility of loans and business growth. Regression analysis also established that as creditworthiness improved, the firm growth also increased. Since the results indicated that credit worthiness has a positive impact on growth of dairy SME. It is also advisable that policymakers create other credit evaluation frameworks which minimize on collateral like credit scoring frameworks founded on business performance and cash flows.
