AGRICULTURAL TOURISM: A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM DIVERSIFICATION

Abstract

Agricultural tourism, commonly known as agritourism, has emerged as an innovative form of tourism that combines agricultural activities with recreational and educational experiences. It provides tourists with opportunities to engage directly with farming practices, rural lifestyles, and local traditions while generating additional income for agricultural communities. In recent decades, agritourism has become increasingly important as a tool for sustainable rural development, economic diversification, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation. This article examines the concept of agricultural tourism, its economic and social significance, major forms and activities, benefits and challenges, and its development prospects, particularly in developing countries. The study argues that agricultural tourism can contribute significantly to rural prosperity by creating employment opportunities, supporting local businesses, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
