Transforming Modern Learning through Value-Based Education and Gandhian Philosophy

Abstract

Education is a vital instrument for personal growth, social transformation, and nation-building. While conventional education often emphasizes academic achievement and vocational skills, the importance of moral and ethical development remainsunderappreciated in modern curricula. Gandhian philosophy offers a comprehensiveframework for value-based education, emphasizing the holistic development ofindividuals by integrating physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth. According toMahatma Gandhi, education should cultivate self-realization, moral integrity, empathy, andsocial responsibility, enabling students to become ethically grounded, self-reliant, andsocially conscious citizens. This paper explores the core principles of Gandhian value-based education, includingthe cultivation of higher values, holistic child development, vocational and life-orientedlearning, self-realization through truth, and the promotion of Ahimsa (non-violence),empathy, and ethical conduct. It highlights the role of teachers as moral exemplars, guiding students not only academically but also in character formation. Gandhi’s emphasis on self-confidence, independence, simple living, high thinking, and cultural awareness reinforces the importance of nurturing responsible and compassionate individuals capableof contributing meaningfully to society.
