This report presents the findings of a field study conducted in Galkacyo, Puntland, as part of a wider feasibility study on establishing a modern wholesale and retail market together with an inland dry port system in Garowe. The purpose of this report is to provide a clear understanding of the current trade conditions, logistics systems, and market structure in Galkacyo. It highlights the key challenges faced by traders, transporters, and the wider community, while also exploring the opportunities for improving trade efficiency and economic development. The data used in this report was collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews, and direct field observations. This approach allowed the study to capture real experiences and practical insights from people directly involved in trade and logistics activities. The report focuses on important areas such as trade connectivity, transport systems, storage conditions, market organisation, and trader capacity. It also examines how these factors affect the movement of goods, price stability, and overall economic performance in the region. In addition, the report assesses the potential impact of developing a modern, integrated trade system based in Garowe, and how such a system could improve trade linkages, reduce costs, and create new economic opportunities for Galkacyo and the wider Puntland region. Overall, this report is intended to support decision-makers, development partners, and stakeholders by providing evidence-based insights and practical recommendations for strengthening trade systems and promoting sustainable economic growth.
