AR Assessments — Using Augmented Reality for Real-World Student Evaluations

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged as a transformative technology in modern education, offering accessible and immersive experiences without the physiological drawbacks associated with Virtual Reality (VR). This paper proposes a novel AR-based assessment framework designed to evaluate students through simulated real-world scenarios rather than traditional pen-and-paper examinations. The framework is motivated by the limitations of existing VR classroom implementations, including motion sickness, high hardware overhead, and poor daily usability. As a proof of concept, an iOS application (Examar) was developed using ARKit and SwiftUI to place students in interactive, scenario-based assessments --- demonstrated through a supermarket shopping task targeting foundational mathematics for primary school children. The proposed system enables hybrid evaluation by both the AR platform and the supervising educator. This paper outlines the design, implementation, comparative analysis of AR versus VR in educational contexts, and a roadmap for future extensions including Natural Language Processing, adaptive Machine Learning-based assessment generation, and application to the employment sector.
