Animated Velocity Field over the Central Eastern Tunisian Coast

Abstract

This video illustrates the evolution of the velocity field within the regional model domain, covering a macro-scale sector of the central-eastern Tunisian coastline, extending from the Gulf of Hammamet to Chebba and bounded by latitudes $35^\circ 12' \mathrm{N}$--$36^\circ 30' \mathrm{N}$ and longitudes $10^\circ 24' \mathrm{E}$--$11^\circ 42' \mathrm{E}$. The simulation is initialized with the velocity field$$u_0=(-20,0,0)\chi_{\omega^*},$$where the support region $\omega^*$ is defined on the computational grid by$$(160{:}180)\times(160{:}180)\times(3{:}4).$$This region occupies a horizontal footprint of $20\times20$ grid cells and extends over the $\sigma$-levels $3$ and $4$. In physical coordinates, $\sigma$-level~$3$ corresponds to depths ranging from $15.13\,\mathrm{m}$ to $38.59\,\mathrm{m}$, while $\sigma$-level~$4$ spans depths from $20.17\,\mathrm{m}$ to $51.46\,\mathrm{m}$. Consequently, the support of the initial perturbation occupies the depth interval$$[15.13\,\mathrm{m},\,51.46\,\mathrm{m}]$$over the prescribed horizontal footprint. The localized perturbation is therefore situated within the intermediate layer of the water column, below the directly observed near-surface layers and above the deeper benthic region. It is located in an area of moderate bathymetric depth within the Bay of Monastir, making it representative of subsurface flow structures that are not directly observable from surface measurements.
