Resource Sheet: Episode 3: Role of Libraries in Research Support for Scientific Software

Abstract

This resource sheet was created for Episode 3 of an online meetup series focusing on Research Software and NRENs in Asia. The series kicked off on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, on 11 February, 2026. Episode 3 focused on the role of libraries in research support for scientific software. Questions that were addressed in the session include: When was a moment of realisation that software and technical skills were becoming central to research support, and how did that change your approach to library services? How to encourage librarians and information professionals to develop confidence and competence in areas such as coding? What mistakes or misconceptions should future library professionals avoid when approaching software and technical work? How do you balance the pressure to adopt new technologies with limited staffing, time, or resources? How can future leaders in libraries create environments that encourage experimentation and skill-building? and many more! Our guest: Victoria F Caplan, Head of Research and Learning Support, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The event was hosted as part of the Memorandum of Understanding between the RSE Asia Association and the Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) More information is available on the RSE Asia website.
