Abstract

This deliverable presents the exploitation plan and business model, developed within Task 6.4 of the European Citizen Science (ECS) project. During this process the European Citizen Science Academy (ECS Academy) was identified as one of the key resources with exploitation potential and thus selected as the core element of the business plan presented in this deliverable. At the end of the ECS project the coordinator, the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA), will take over the management responsibility and long term maintenance of this ECS Academy. This deliverable serves both as a practical handover document and a strategic roadmap. It defines a clear and actionable path toward establishing a sustainable, high-impact European training and learning hub for citizen science —rooted in openness, professionalisation, and long-term value creation for the community. The sections below outline in detail the strategy under which a wide range of ideas for services and revenue streams were generated, tested, and consolidated and finally translated into a structured business model and a detailed business plan. At the heart of the proposed model stands the Optimal Technical Environment (OTE) – a scalable, integrated platform architecture that enables professional service delivery, sustainable revenue generation, and improved user experience. A minimal viable product (MVP) was also defined as a starting point towards the development of enough capacity to enable the accomplishment of the OTE. A key outcome of all these analyses is the need of a one time investment which would ensure the timely development of the necessary internal structures (described in detail in sections 3 and 4) that would allow ECSA to operate the ECS Academy under the OTE long term through a self-sustaining model. Long-term sustainability will depend not only on this technical investment, but also on continued community engagement, dedicated coordination capacity, strategic partnerships, and ECSA’s ability to secure the necessary governance and funding support (described in section 5). The ECS Academy already provides learning opportunities to several audiences and it has proven to be a highly valued resource by the citizen science community. Under ECSA’s stewardship, and with the continued support of its members and funding partners, it has the potential to become a leading European and international hub for citizen science training and capacity building both in Europe and beyond.
