Quantum technologies for future power & energy systems: opportunities, roadblocks, and a call to action from Quantum4EnergyNL

Abstract

Quantum technologies — spanning sensing, communications, and computing — offer new paradigms for addressing the measurement, cybersecurity, and computational challenges that future power and energy systems will face. This report assesses the state of the field, with a focus on the Dutch research and innovation landscape. Drawing on international literature, an overview of relevant research projects, and a national expert workshop organised by Quantum4EnergyNL in March 2026, it identifies near-term opportunities in quantum sensing, medium-term prospects in quantum computing for optimisation, and structural barriers that risk slowing progress. The report concludes with recommendations for funders, researchers, and industry. The Quantum4EnergyNL initiative is funded by the 4TU.Energy and 4TU.NIRICT.
