Ball-on-disc measurements of the transient behaviour of the adhesion coefficient of water based suspensions

Abstract

This data set contains measurements of the transient behaviour of the adhesion coefficient of water based suspensions.Measurements were conducted on a Mini Traction Machine (MTM), a ball-on-disc testIn the MTM, a rotating ball is rolling on a rotating disc with a defined creepage. Both ball and disc are made of bearing steel, which has the advantages of high wear resistance and thus not changing contact geometry and surface roughness. The ball is vertically loaded, and the suspension is applied to the running contact by micropipette after the dry run-in and the evolution of the adhesion coefficient is recorded. The vertical load in these experiments was 16 N, corresponding to an average Hertzian stress of 510 MPa, the rolling speeds were 300, 50, 20 mm/s and the Slide-to-Roll Ratio was 0.05. Particles of different materials were mixed with water to obtain the tested suspension:talc, iron, black iron oxides and glass spheres.
