Abstract

This scultpure is a representation of the common subject of the Madonna and Child. However, the title of the piece indicates its focus on the mother rather than baby Jesus, which is a rarer position taken by artists. Indeed, the baby is hardly visible whereas the important volume of the statue emphasizes the protective aspect of the mother. Although the features are extremely simple and the details very few, the spectator may immediately recognize the Virgin Mary's image thanks to her veil and her child.
