Abstract

This work analyzes the experience of the boatsmen of Alter do Chão (PA), workers who operate in the transportation of residents and tourists through community-based tourism, contributing to socio-environmental sustainability and the cultural maintenance of the territory. Dornelas (2018) highlights that the entrepreneur is a social transformation agent capable of identifying opportunities and generating creative and sustainable solutions, including in community contexts, as is the case with the boatsmen. For the construction of this work, a qualitative approach was employed, utilizing research techniques such as semi-structured interviews, documentary survey and analysis, and participant observation based on the experience of the author of this article, who served as Secretary of the Alter do Chão Boatsmen Association from 2004 to 2006. The research evidenced the importance of the boatsmen, who since 1980 have contributed to the development and strengthening of sustainable, community-based tourism, as well as to the subsistence of numerous local families.
