Riuso, riciclo e contraffazione nelle disposizioni normative della Toscana basso medievale (secc. XIII-XIV)

Abstract

The article investigates the relationship between practices of reuse, recycling, and material recovery in late medieval Tuscany (13th-14th centuries), and the normative provisions issued by the Florentine guilds. Within one of the most dynamic productive and commercial contexts of the period, these corporate bodies sought to regulate the use of defective, recycled, or repurposed materials, navigating between stringent restrictions and conditional forms of tolerance. Analysis of statutory rubrics reveals that the primary rationale lay in safeguarding the quality of the manufactured product and the reputation of the guild, through close monitoring and sanctions, while at the same time situating producers and merchants within a liminal space between what was formally legitimate and what was merely permitted or tacitly tolerated. The aim is to offer an initial outline of the intersections between circular economy practices, guild regulation, and commercial activity, thereby contributing to a line of research that integrates economic, institutional, and social history of late medieval Tuscany.
