Narratives of maritime risk: a Natural Language Processing approach to reassess ancient seafaring strategies in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract

This paper applies NLP, topic modelling, machine-learning classification, and explainable AI to Greek and Latin texts, comparing narrative constructions of risk with archaeological and environmental evidence to reassess ancient seafaring strategies in the Mediterranean.
