Production of Sodium Hypochlorite from the Brine of the West Tripoli Desalination Plant

Abstract

This study investigates the production of sodium hypochlorite from desalination brine using an electrochemical process. The research focuses on evaluating the effect of key operational parameters, including electrode type, applied voltage, electrode spacing, and electrode surface area, on the efficiency of chlorine generation. The results showed that dimensionally stable anodes (DSA, RuO₂/TiO₂) achieved the highest production efficiency, reaching a concentration of 582.2 ppm at 5.0 V and 1.0 cm after 100 minutes, with minimal mass loss, indicating high stability and corrosion resistance. In contrast, graphite electrodes demonstrated lower efficiency and stability, with a maximum concentration of 182 ppm under similar conditions and higher electrode degradation. Additionally, increasing the surface area of graphite electrodes improved production efficiency significantly. The study concludes that DSA electrodes are the most effective option for producing sodium hypochlorite from desalination brine, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for managing brine discharge and reducing marine pollution.
