Acoustic strategy for avoiding same-sex amplexus in male concave-eared torrent frogs

Abstract

Video 1. Single-speaker playback of male short calls in the field. Playing male short calls alone in the wild does not elicit phonotaxis in males.Video 2. Single-speaker playback of male long calls in the field. Playing male long calls alone in the wild triggers combined behavioral responses in males.Video 3. Single-speaker playback of female short calls in the field. Playing female short calls alone in the wild does not elicit phonotaxis in males.Video 4. Single-speaker playback of female long calls in the field. Playing female long calls alone in the wild triggers combined behavioral responses in males.Video 5. Single-speaker playback of male calling bouts in the field. When several short calls from males were inserted between their long calls (i.e., within calling bouts) and played back, the male frogs did not exhibit phonotactic behavior.Video 6. Two-speaker playback of male and female long calls in the field. When long calls from both male and female concave-eared torrent frogs were simultaneously broadcast through two separate loudspeakers in the field, some male frogs continued to display combined behavioral responses specifically to the male long calls, even when female long calls were present.
