Baicalein from Scutellaria baicalensis (TCM) for Craniosynostosis Prevention via BMP Pathway Modulation

Abstract

Baicalein, the primary flavonoid from Scutellaria baicalensis, selectively inhibits BMP2/4 signaling through direct binding to BMP receptors ALK2 and ALK3, preventing premature osteoblast differentiation. The compound also upregulates TWIST1 expression via PI3K/AKT pathway activation, maintaining suture patency during cranial development.
