Azithromycin Combination with Rifampicin for Enhanced T. pallidum pertenue Clearance

Abstract

Azithromycin targets the 23S rRNA subunit of T. pallidum pertenue ribosomes, while rifampicin inhibits bacterial RNA polymerase β-subunit (rpoB). The combination provides synergistic bactericidal activity against spirochetes and reduces selection pressure for macrolide resistance mutations in the 23S rRNA gene.
